I had been sitting on some scraps of Amy Butler charm fabric, and I had no idea what to do with them. I created a wall hanging from these fabrics nearly 10 years ago, and had stashed the leftovers in the drawer and forgot about them.<br />
<br />
Recently, I decided I need to start working through some of my scraps, and make pretty things from them. These quilts are the first on that list. It felt great to make even a small dent in my scrap stash.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilts are almost the same. They have the same fabrics in them, both measure 51" square, and have the same backing fabric (by freespirit). The only difference is the layout. One of the quilts has prints on the outside edges, and the other has the border fabric on the outside. That's it, the only difference.</div>

Both were longarm quilted on my handi-quilter (by me), one quilted with swirls, and one quilted with flowers. I used Quilters Dream batting in both, and I love the way this batting quilts up. I have far fewer issues with this batting than some of the other popular brands out there.</div>

These would be great quilts for little girls, especially if they share a room. They are close enough to match, but you can still tell which quilt is which.<br />
<br />
Of course, these quilts are also great summer couch quilts. The batting in them is light, and they are the perfect size for your favorite couch or chair, or even an evening by the lake.<br />

<br />
I really love how these turned out. They are simple, but I didn't want to detract from the boldness of the fabric. I love how modern they are.<br />
<br />
Both are for sale in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/thequiltedmitten" target="_blank">Etsy Shop</a>, and can be found <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/718044381/lap-quilt-girly-amy-butler-charm?ref=shop_home_active_2" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/718044451/lap-quilt-girly-amy-butler-charm?ref=shop_home_active_1" target="_blank">here</a>. In all honesty, if I didn't already have a quilt made from these fabrics, at least one of these would be staying with me!<br />
<br />
Thanks for visiting! What scrap projects have you been working on lately?<br />

<br />
Have any of you been participating in Instagram Quilt Fest (#igquiltfest) this year? This is my first year participating, and it has been so much fun! I love seeing everyone's personality come through in sharing their version of the prompts. It's been a great way for me to learn about new-to-me quilters as well and help jump back into the amazing community of quilters we have out there.<br />
<br />
This week I'd like to talk about a quilt pattern that I find myself making over and over again. I actually showed a quilt made with this pattern a few weeks ago, but I have some more examples I'd like to share today. <br />
<br />
I love this quilt, because it's the perfect "gift" size; great for snuggling on the couch, using at the office, or even for a baby. Also, it works great with feature fabric and large scale prints that have been so popular in recent years.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM1KtpF-G6rikNEEpVfG4_ti4oJ9SbYMqT8t6wXG-dSO8swAA58C4VXdx-0t5wSEie_f0BhaZjwbwADdFz9wZ60s2r2Gz3jqlDUrLEQPQ5eGV_JOg6vXurKxEPp4ij-NAPiRpijU2PhqU/s1600/Oh+Deer%2521+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM1KtpF-G6rikNEEpVfG4_ti4oJ9SbYMqT8t6wXG-dSO8swAA58C4VXdx-0t5wSEie_f0BhaZjwbwADdFz9wZ60s2r2Gz3jqlDUrLEQPQ5eGV_JOg6vXurKxEPp4ij-NAPiRpijU2PhqU/s640/Oh+Deer%2521+4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern is "Girls Best Friend" by Mountainpeek Creations (found <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Girls-Best-Friends-Quilt-Pattern/dp/B0047C46KW" target="_blank">here</a>). I never felt like the quilt on the cover of the pattern did the pattern any justice, as almost every quilt I've seen made from this has been more attractive (in my opinion) than the cover quilt. However, that could just be the photography, which can sometimes be difficult on quilts that don't have a ton of contrast in the piecing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm glad I gave it a chance while working at Quilts Plus, in Kalamazoo MI, because this quickly became one of my go-to patterns and most made design.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the first one I made (9 years ago already!) while working at Quilts Plus:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaKNU_So1X0x9iS03lMww8L6RuoeG2W4zVFbATqbCPLlDVb7ULwU4o5inBFAuK7BdHvJ-Ntu3iGoGbtiZFTGICjcQUH4JYGnqF0Wvxgrm9bOVfdRZxt45PlL4Ag166nXstRyOt5RrnaO0/s1600/IMG_20190311_172724-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1282" data-original-width="1600" height="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaKNU_So1X0x9iS03lMww8L6RuoeG2W4zVFbATqbCPLlDVb7ULwU4o5inBFAuK7BdHvJ-Ntu3iGoGbtiZFTGICjcQUH4JYGnqF0Wvxgrm9bOVfdRZxt45PlL4Ag166nXstRyOt5RrnaO0/s640/IMG_20190311_172724-01.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I loved the softness of the blue and green in this quilt (try and ignore my icky orange carpet), and to this day this is one of my favorite quilts to leave out in my living room. One way I like to manipulate this pattern is to use a different fabric for the 4 corner blocks. The pattern calls for this fabric to be the same as the center and border, but I always felt that it made the other blocks look they were floating weirdly in the middle of the focus fabric. Changing the fabric layout a little bit helps me feel like the piecing is more intentional.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another example I'd like to show is a quilt I actually have for sale in my<a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/650127444/dog-lover-throw-blanket-lap-quilt?ref=shop_home_active_1" target="_blank"> Etsy</a> shop right now:</div>

Sometimes I love them for the fabrics, sometimes I love them for the memories they bring to the forefront of my mind. Sometimes I love them just because they were fun to make. Every once in a while though, I love one for all of these reasons, and when I look at it I am immediately happy. This is one of those quilts.<br />
<br />
For now, this is my favorite quilt I've ever made. I don't know exactly why. Maybe it has to do with the unique pattern (from <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Living-Large-2-Heather-Peterson/dp/B00527DLHU" target="_blank">Livin' Large 2</a> by Heather Mulder Petersen). Maybe it has to do with the Fabric (Parisville by Tula Pink), which I hoarded for YEARS before I finally decided what to do with it. Maybe it has to do with the colors, modern yet not too loud. In reality, it is probably all of those things.<br />
<br />

Piecing for this quilt was more difficult than I anticipated. If you look closely I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find where the trellis pieces don't match exactly. I think the difficulty was that you need to match diagonal seams with perpendicular ones. Thankfully it isn't largely noticeable and the overall affect is really fun.<br />

I love this fabric so much. I don't know if it's due to my love of historic dress, but as soon as I saw the "Marie Antoinette" wigs I knew I needed this fabric in my life!!! How fun are these ladies!?</div>

I had considered putting a border on this quilt, but by the time I finally got the center of the quilt done, the fabric was long out of print. In the end I think I actually like it better without the border, and it's still a large full size quilt which works well on a bed or to snuggle on the couch.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you read my last post, you might recognize the backing for this quilt. I've been trying to shop my stash first, especially for backings, but I didn't have enough of any one fabric. I DID have two pieces of yardage that were the same color though, and they both blended well with the pink on the front of the quilt. An extra strip of purple gave me enough fabric for the back, and it felt GREAT to use up these pieces of yardage that had been hanging around a long time. Both of these salvages were dated 1999! 20 years after they were printed, they finally found a use. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The binding was from Tula Pink's True Colors collection. It blended great, and I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg to get fabric from the Parisville collection. Sometimes I find it's easy to get caught up in the "need" for fabric from the same line, but often I can find another choice that's more economical. </div>

<br />
This week I'd like to chat about my stash. I know many of us stash fabric (it generally doesn't take long to have a collection of fabric), and I always think it's interesting to see how other people use theirs, so I thought I'd share my "stash" philosophy with you!<br />
<br />
I have been lucky enough to work in not one, not two, but THREE different fabric stores as I've moved around the state. As I'm sure no one would be surprised to hear, all three of them had beautiful fabric tempting me to take some home with me nearly every time I worked. Also, I have an amazing grandmother who not only generously taught me to quilt, but in the past has shared some of her "stash" with me when she decided she needed to downsize how much fabric she had.<br />
<br />
Also, as many quilters know, most projects have scraps or small yardage amounts left over once the project is finished. I do like to cut my scraps down into usable pre-cut sizes like Bonnie Hunter (<a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/06/scrap-users-system.html" target="_blank">check out quiltville.com for details</a>, this lady is a genius), but after a while that leaves me with a TON of pre-cut scraps.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxK9uwlSk16VMD0EiaCGnGEkuhGY4-9bUg29shNXcny-D2bSr5fzzUAKUR-_JdDny4zknUMm9Qho1h-3Rttahp9iacXbLv_lMp6Rq8GFDvopkzSd8MSu2aqcz1KW2rQZoqUxnSmtzgqvw/s1600/Beach+Glass+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1072" data-original-width="1600" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxK9uwlSk16VMD0EiaCGnGEkuhGY4-9bUg29shNXcny-D2bSr5fzzUAKUR-_JdDny4zknUMm9Qho1h-3Rttahp9iacXbLv_lMp6Rq8GFDvopkzSd8MSu2aqcz1KW2rQZoqUxnSmtzgqvw/s640/Beach+Glass+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
All of these things led me to having a MASSIVE stash of fabric. Something needed to be done. WE SIMPLY DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR THIS TO CONTINUE!!! haha.<br />
<br />
So, in the last 5 years, I have been on a "Fabric Diet". What does that mean, you might ask? It means I shop my stash first for a project, and only purchase new fabric to finish a project. For the most part, this has worked out really well. Most of the time I stick to this, and I am able to make a small dent in the fabric I am storing each time I start a new project. HOWEVER, just like any diet, sometimes you might have a "cheat" day. ;) Overall, my occasional cheat days have balanced out the diet days, but at least I haven't been "gaining weight".<br />
<br />
One way I have been especially good at dieting is shopping my stash for backing fabrics. Generally I don't worry as much about being "matchy-matchy" with my backing as long as it's close to matching. Also, sometimes I will piece different pieces of yardage to make a "scrappy" backing. In the end these pieced backs end up being some of my favorites because they make use of older fabric that has been collecting dust in the cabinet. Here is an example of one of my pieced backs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Xk4IQ-PDg7A5f02rThvvO4OZzaGJU8DR7br4cHeHgKHOSo_gwh8e0UVUTK_YwOxeRhIpmZJUBCbnQWmk3u60clHMMzrl3wwRi5RjtN27kZwGkGVCJpAFN05cPCvK249-3DdhGn-WVtw/s1600/7687191910_8480665aa4_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1038" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4Xk4IQ-PDg7A5f02rThvvO4OZzaGJU8DR7br4cHeHgKHOSo_gwh8e0UVUTK_YwOxeRhIpmZJUBCbnQWmk3u60clHMMzrl3wwRi5RjtN27kZwGkGVCJpAFN05cPCvK249-3DdhGn-WVtw/s640/7687191910_8480665aa4_o.jpg" width="414" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Whenever I do a back like this I feel like I have really accomplished something, and most people don't look at the backing anyway. However, I tend not to follow this approach if I plan to put a quilt up for sale.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In a recent finish (coming to the blog soon!), I was able to use up two pieces of yardage that were the same color, but different patterns. Both prints were from 1999!!! It felt so great to use these and see these fabrics finally find a purpose. I used a strip of purple in the middle to help distract from the fact that they were different prints, and also because I needed a little bit extra width in the backing. Who cares that they are different prints? The color matches well with the front and it turned out great. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Guys, I have to be honest with you though. Accountability is part of any successful diet, you know? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I totally BINGED on fabric this weekend. Check out the stack below...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCYiIdMD1ZAhEQ0YpyJRMx1Kms2K1wzlpUcoBI6USiaxa9HhJzZkI_ep8KQ6DTztqJn4V7LVZt2hmj0TWp0Ldn2JbLfGFRDEPClajDU8b4TpjcUmQyQTuDw_nX59flpK_XdFMNWoVfoMk/s1600/IMG_20190216_150153_560.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCYiIdMD1ZAhEQ0YpyJRMx1Kms2K1wzlpUcoBI6USiaxa9HhJzZkI_ep8KQ6DTztqJn4V7LVZt2hmj0TWp0Ldn2JbLfGFRDEPClajDU8b4TpjcUmQyQTuDw_nX59flpK_XdFMNWoVfoMk/s640/IMG_20190216_150153_560.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The worst part of this picture is.....this is only HALF of what I bought!!! What have I done!?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It isn't all bad. There is a great fabric store chain in West Michigan, <a href="https://fieldsfabrics.com/" target="_blank">Fields Fabrics</a>. They have the best clearance section in the entire world. I'm not kidding. There were tons of Freespirit prints from designers like Amy Butler, Anna Maria Horner, Denyse Schmidt, Joel Dewberry, etc. for $2.97 to $4.97 a yard! How could I say no!?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Although I went nuts buying fabric, I will say that most of what I bought followed my "fabric diet" rules. I was able to pick up a number of quilt backings for existing projects at an unbeatable price. Also I was able to rebuild my stash with fabrics from my favorite designers for a lot less money than buying yardage full price.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So tell me! What are some of your favorite ways to bust your stash? Are you on a "Stash Diet" like me? I'd love to hear what you guys are doing to keep your hoard...I mean STASH...under control?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Have a good one!</div>

<br />
Thank you for the kind response I got on last weeks post! I know the Tula Troops are out in full force, and it's always so fun to see what people do with her beautiful fabrics. I have more Elizabeth fabric, and I am trying to decide if I can part with it or not, or if I want to keep it for myself (I know I'm being selfish haha).<br />
<br />
This week I'd like to share another quilt that went to live with my Aunt K. This is a quilt top I had already pieced for myself out of long hoarded Joel Dewberry fabric (I feel like fabric hoarding has become a theme of my life). This top had been awaiting quilting for quite some time, but it had never been on the top of my priority list.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS64dEMV8gws5GAzkQzqXjrOayIWM3zVr1AXS-l9qob5vb3MEVVee8WxyDAOwlVnJOMdrzQFlcnKNKGIFBi8LBFRpBmWv9V8QLR2gr20zTrdy4d2ZsKCF3Ly4SowMxJrSl30iKov-YbRM/s1600/Oh+Deer%2521+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS64dEMV8gws5GAzkQzqXjrOayIWM3zVr1AXS-l9qob5vb3MEVVee8WxyDAOwlVnJOMdrzQFlcnKNKGIFBi8LBFRpBmWv9V8QLR2gr20zTrdy4d2ZsKCF3Ly4SowMxJrSl30iKov-YbRM/s640/Oh+Deer%2521+4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I loved this quilt, but I knew it would find a good home with my aunt, and quite frankly I have plenty of quilts already. I had only recently brought home my long-arm machine, so this was a great smaller project to practice on.<br />
<br />
This pattern is one of my all time favorites for large prints. It's a great lap size for the back of a couch, office, or wheelchair quilt. It is also great as an over-sized baby quilt. The pattern is "Girls Best Friend" by Mary's Cottage Quilts (found <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Girls-Best-Friends-Quilt-Pattern/dp/B0047C46KW" target="_blank">here</a>).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have made this quilt AT LEAST 6 times, and it always turns out great. It especially works well if your local shop only gets a few bolts out of a collection. You can highlight some great large prints, and this quilt goes together SO SO QUICKLY.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've always loved the Deer Damask from Joel Dewberry. I was sad to see this fabric go, however I recently saw on Freespirit Fabric's website that he is releasing a new collection soon with new colorways of the Deer print. I might just have to make another one of these in a new colorway!!!</div>

<br />
I have 2 quilts to share with you in the near future. Both of them were finished quite some time ago, however I am just now realizing that I never got the opportunity to show them to you!<br />
<br />
I think it was about 3 years ago now (sheesh I'm behind), my Aunt K contacted me about making her a quilt. Originally she was interested in finding one that I had already finished, or had a finished top, but in the end I didn't really have anything ready made in the style and colors she was looking for. Ultimately we decided that I should make her a quilt of her own.<br />
<br />
She really loved a quilt that I was working on with Parisville fabric by Tula Pink, however I had been hoarding that fabric quite a long time, and it was long out of print. Luckily, Elizabeth by Tula Pink had just been released which was similar in color story and style.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Because there were so many prints in this collection, we decided to use pre-cuts to get all the color variety and pattern into the quilt. We also used one of my quilt patterns <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/130055784/instant-download-quilt-pattern-pdf-when?ref=shop_home_active_6" target="_blank">"When in Rome"</a> which works great with charm packs or a layer cake.<br />
<br />
This picture shows my "design wall" (aka a quilt hanging on the wall), as I laid out the blocks for the best color placement.<br />

It feels weird to review my own pattern, because I'm obviously biased, but I do really like the way this plays with charm packs AND yardage. It's a good way to use a whole collection while also highlighting larger prints. The center block and the border are bigger cuts so that you can show off the feature fabric without losing design.<br />
<br />
Here is the center of the quilt with all of the blocks and sashing. <br />

I love the way this quilt turned out. The hardest part was letting it go, because I love Tula Pink so much!!! I quilted this all over with a floral pattern, and even backed it with Tula's extra wide fabric.<br />

<br />
Ooh! I almost forgot!!! I stashed more of this fabric!!! ;) I haven't started it yet, but there will be a version 2.0 of this quilt added to the Etsy shop at some time in the future. If you are an Etsy user, favorite my shop to stay in the loop. :)<br />
<br />
Thanks everyone!!! Hoping for an early spring!<br />

<br />
It has been pretty silent around here for a good long while now. Life got terribly out of hand, and it has felt as if we are only now getting our feet back under us. I have still been quilting since the last time you heard from me, and I have a lot to share with you over the next few weeks or months. You may hear more from me for a while since I have a lot of backlogged projects to share.<br />
<br />
Up first are the quilts I made for our nieces at the end of 2016 (I know that was a long time ago).<br />
<br />
The first quilt is a low volume quilt from the book <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Neutral-Inspired-Natures-Elements/dp/1604683902/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409771665&sr=8-1&keywords=beyond+neutral" target="_blank">"Beyond Neutral"</a> by John Adams (aka Quilt Dad). The quilt pattern is actually the cover quilt from this book even though it has a very different vibe. I LOVE the colors in John's quilt, but I wanted to tone it down to fit the girl that was to receive it. Her room is teal and grey, so I thought this was a fun geometric pattern that would work well with a low-volume color palette.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCAQguahar4XNEdHfKXwjGu4h1CKs_js4g5xnhFDDyzVLpo5Wc22JOOUycDdYcT0HtVdDKPIgOURddmrnXrZojAYzWP2MQ-Ms2OnYm-8sI1iHUpjT9C8BcuMV3eJH2rQ2_KOMJne5KPAE/s1600/Stormy+Skies+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCAQguahar4XNEdHfKXwjGu4h1CKs_js4g5xnhFDDyzVLpo5Wc22JOOUycDdYcT0HtVdDKPIgOURddmrnXrZojAYzWP2MQ-Ms2OnYm-8sI1iHUpjT9C8BcuMV3eJH2rQ2_KOMJne5KPAE/s640/Stormy+Skies+1.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The colors look even softer in the picture due to the lighting, however the teal fabrics actually are rather vibrant.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the background fabric that I used on this quilt. It is a cloud 9 organic cotton, and it almost has a shot-cotton look to it. The fabric also has a very nice drape and hand. It is definitely something I would love to snuggle with, so I knew it would be perfect for a young lady.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I quilted it all over with swirls. I am still learning to be more effective with my long-arm machine, and this was quilted early in my quilting career. I did do some larger swirls in the open areas of the quilts and it gives a great motion to the quilt. It almost makes the background fabric look like smoke or clouds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We photographed this quilt when the girls came to visit us in the fall of 2016. They have grown up so much since then! I love looking at these pictures and remembering that weekend. (if you're wondering why she is standing like this in the photo, it is because she is only wearing one shoe, and wanted to hide her bare foot, haha!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6FkHJdnAttZvFqgkJ23IQpFKRWkOmjEAYKu1mY_9rzPGt1CrgwyIteWvZd_47zv0jfXWcb9qrueCEq5LIm1J5607DEuksRzc5NY59_sY2UOV5Ji5Z7emNMWPD5GrSIhhUF36j4_HlEjk/s1600/Stormy+Skies+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6FkHJdnAttZvFqgkJ23IQpFKRWkOmjEAYKu1mY_9rzPGt1CrgwyIteWvZd_47zv0jfXWcb9qrueCEq5LIm1J5607DEuksRzc5NY59_sY2UOV5Ji5Z7emNMWPD5GrSIhhUF36j4_HlEjk/s640/Stormy+Skies+3.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Her sister received her quilt at Christmas of the same year. She has decorated her room with a NYC feel, so I wanted to give her something that would fit her style.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This quilt is from the book <a href="https://www.amazon.com/City-Quilts-Dramatic-Projects-Inspired/dp/157120847X" target="_blank">"City Quilts"</a> by Cherri House. Again, I made the cover quilt from this book! I love every quilt in this book. I love her use of solids, and the way they can make an dramatic impact. This quilt is supposed to mimic the way light reflects off the windows of a sky scraper. I love the effect, and it worked perfectly in T's room.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZYHSNfYs2SsmlvWQstm21lIOIIMfMMfDXZF-LWyiU3lUkklIe0o-FGoqUz-J8Tu7HboYZ1ugmeFs4406Fj0hJ2M8gDSvdzs4Y1Rpoq_SYIL2_wjmVC1CpJwPe-Ro-aBDkKm6XAKtBVAA/s1600/City+Lights+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZYHSNfYs2SsmlvWQstm21lIOIIMfMMfDXZF-LWyiU3lUkklIe0o-FGoqUz-J8Tu7HboYZ1ugmeFs4406Fj0hJ2M8gDSvdzs4Y1Rpoq_SYIL2_wjmVC1CpJwPe-Ro-aBDkKm6XAKtBVAA/s640/City+Lights+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This photo more accurately shows the colors of the fabric. This was also quilted with swirls because I wanted something curved and soft to play off the straight lines.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The girls loved them which is my favorite part! Have you made any quilts for gifts lately? What did you make?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hopefully I will have more to share with you soon! I have made so many quilts!</div>

I've reached a point where I have to be selective with what quilts I keep as they are starting to take over my house. The quilt I have to share with you today is another gifted quilt.<br />
<br />
I pieced this quilt back when I was still in college, like 2009 or 2010. In fact I blogged about it way back in the day when I finished piecing it (see post <a href="http://thequiltedmitten.blogspot.com/2010/05/its-top-finally.html" target="_blank">here</a>). I have been holding onto this quilt for a while because I wanted to give it to my father and his fiance' for their wedding gift. Well, it seems that this lovely couple is destined to be perpetually engaged. I know they are going to be together forever, and yet wedding plans are still not seemingly in the works. Nonetheless, I got tired of waiting to give this to them, haha.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwaKMzieUhlIOLq7uURnMYATCBuB8L7NDoJhuV6lV8CcUm618vcwWZNfJTRY2YanwFv_hNovrjez0FQomZ9iB8tZ-9E2RBqOzULqYjEEldd6VMvuxFTYUW4JYOXY5tI7PCgDNXVfGnTZ8/s1600/Patches+and+Pinwheels+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwaKMzieUhlIOLq7uURnMYATCBuB8L7NDoJhuV6lV8CcUm618vcwWZNfJTRY2YanwFv_hNovrjez0FQomZ9iB8tZ-9E2RBqOzULqYjEEldd6VMvuxFTYUW4JYOXY5tI7PCgDNXVfGnTZ8/s640/Patches+and+Pinwheels+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I finished the binding on this quilt this past summer on a work trip, hence the photos taken in a hotel room. :) Finishing this quilt was so therapeutic for me, because it felt so great to finish an older project, and also there were some nostalgic fabrics in this quilt. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7seqv91_HFg6B9g58ojePEb7dojY3Ehj7rrzlf9rGA3rHURoCc3E_14PFzcobYQgyUTZmozWHdVIbQlJsN6CPQSmO_A5HHdmmn5uHJ_AW72Gq5_oX-NxAQw9hrSYRPapVGMnZkWxGWxU/s1600/Patches+and+Pinwheels+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7seqv91_HFg6B9g58ojePEb7dojY3Ehj7rrzlf9rGA3rHURoCc3E_14PFzcobYQgyUTZmozWHdVIbQlJsN6CPQSmO_A5HHdmmn5uHJ_AW72Gq5_oX-NxAQw9hrSYRPapVGMnZkWxGWxU/s640/Patches+and+Pinwheels+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The pattern that I used for piecing is "Patches and Pinwheels" which is a free pattern by Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville.com (pattern <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/06/patches-pinwheels.html" target="_blank">here</a>). It is really a 2 block quilt, and even though there are some small pieces, it goes together quickly. I love the movement of this pattern, and I am sure that I will used this pattern again. It is a great way to use up scrap strips of fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNsx7ok7O4X9sv2GvWzc8_s99kCd88Tu1J3JmRd2lwuOJrVCLETa_Aofdkmi5n_kCj1H_kvuJcqoh-iwk91ZdM-HK21kC7ajuqPDqPG31Vn1R2F_k8_iJIU5RlmoxzKxGwhBa0E1tmnKk/s1600/Patches+and+Pinwheels+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNsx7ok7O4X9sv2GvWzc8_s99kCd88Tu1J3JmRd2lwuOJrVCLETa_Aofdkmi5n_kCj1H_kvuJcqoh-iwk91ZdM-HK21kC7ajuqPDqPG31Vn1R2F_k8_iJIU5RlmoxzKxGwhBa0E1tmnKk/s640/Patches+and+Pinwheels+3.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
I broke from my quilting norm, and tried to do something a little different. I quilted free hand maple leaves in a random all over design. I love how it turned out, even if some of the "leaves" are a bit wonky looking. I haven't tried quilting with pantographs yet, so I am always trying to find new designs to use. I can't use swirls on EVERY quilt, ya know?!<br />
<br />
It made my heart happy to give this quilt to people who have been so supportive of me. My dad is the kind of person who cares about listening to what you have to say. He is intelligent, and open minded, and he can always give good advice without making you feel stupid in the process. My Stepmom, in perfect contrast, is warm and caring and a little bit sassy. These people, despite being family, have often been some of the only people I can always count on. I wish I had more than just this quilt to give them. It certainly doesn't begin to pay back all the things they have done for me.<br />
<br />
Thanks for letting me share this quilt with you. :)<br />
<br />
Have a great weekend!<br />

<br />
Did you miss me?! The last year has been a whirlwind for R and I. First of all, we got married in August (yay!). Then we adopted a new puppy. Then we found a new place to live. Then on the day we picked up the keys to our new place, R ended up in the hospital for a short stint (hes fine btw). THEN we lost our beloved 14 year old American Bulldog, Dodge. Its been a lot of drama in a short amount of time, but it seems that we have finally found some peace and quiet. (don't worry, I was knocking on wood as I typed that).<br />
<br />
Understandably, 2016 was not as productive for quilting as 2015, however I do have quite a few projects to share with you, and there has been progress and even some recent quilt finishes. <br />
<br />
The quilt I want to share with you today is one I actually finished last February (eek!). I had contemplated the "Feedsack" line from Moda for a while, and finally bit the bullet. The pattern I used is <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Atkinson-Designs-Pattern-ATK-129-Quarter/dp/B00KB5CF52" target="_blank">"Lucky Stars" by Atkinson Designs</a>. I love this quilt pattern because it uses 12 fat quarters and background. That's it. In my version, I did add a border to make this more of a lap quilt size. This pattern does make larger sizes as well however using more fat quarters.<br />
<br />
I have made this pattern multiple times now, and it never gets old. This size quilt makes a great gift, and it goes together quickly. Because the stars "float" in the background, it is easy to get perfect points every time. It is also a great way to show off larger prints because the pieces are a decent size. <br />
<br />

The fabric in this quilt is so cute! I especially love the tiny trucks. This line also has a lot of smaller classic prints that were blend in well with other lines by this same designer. I loved the pop of robins egg blue as well. It gives this line of fabric something unexpected.<br />
<br />
This was one of the first quilts I finished on my long arm. I quilted it all over with my favorite swirls pattern. Swirls look great on almost every quilt, and I admit I have probably used them too much at this point. Sometimes I just can't think of anything else I would prefer.<br />

Thanks for visiting everyone! I hope everyone is having a great start to 2017!<br />

I have another recent finish to share.<br />
<br />
I have been trying to finish as many of my old neglected quilt tops as possible now that I have my HandiQuilter. It has been a huge weight off my shoulders to see old projects completed, and it makes it easier for me to buy new fabric and start projects knowing that they will eventually get finished and used.<br />
<br />
This is a quilt top that I finished as a display when I worked at <a href="http://keansstore.com/" target="_blank">Kean's Store Company</a> in Mason, MI. I loved how simple this pattern was, yet effective. The pieces are large enough to show off some beautiful prints or batiks, yet the quilt is still visually interesting. My favorite part is that the waste trimmed from the blocks can be used to make another quilt. Unfortunately, I have not gotten that one quilted yet, but the top is finished, and it is on the long list of stuff to get finished.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjVfGih5lqbBRdLW6qWzmJZY1Kxt7vURDDcrtPs85xY2poxqal7hnj1w-qPI1ciPSixCJl1heyhgi-oBK8mST-QR0PGGelkcKksQs6rWI_VlKd-bJUKWFLzwrJK0hzM5MUh67eJUL41U0/s1600/Happy+Hour+1-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjVfGih5lqbBRdLW6qWzmJZY1Kxt7vURDDcrtPs85xY2poxqal7hnj1w-qPI1ciPSixCJl1heyhgi-oBK8mST-QR0PGGelkcKksQs6rWI_VlKd-bJUKWFLzwrJK0hzM5MUh67eJUL41U0/s640/Happy+Hour+1-3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
This quilt pattern is called "Triple Treat" and it is from the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Happy-Hour-Quilting-Book/dp/B002JMXYPK" target="_blank">"Happy Hour Quilts"</a> by Atkinson Designs. This book has been out for quite some time, but it never seems to go out of style. These patterns are beginner friendly and modern. The best part is, the book gives you instruction for each quilt in any size you'd like to make, which makes it much easier to plan if you are making a quilt for a specific purpose or gift.<br />

I quilted this quilt with an all over swirl pattern. I still haven't gotten any pantographs for my machine, so I have been doing all free motion by hand. I loved the way it turned out, the swirls give great motion to what is otherwise a very geometric quilt full of straight lines.<br />

I love this quilt! Right now it is hanging up in the shop as we still sell this book (because it's great!). I was especially happy because I was able to use up a couple large pieces of batik fabric for the backing. It always feels good to use up what I already have in my stash.<br />
<br />
The flu has been going around at work, and I am the latest victim. Unfortunately I haven't been feeling up to any sewing, but at least I can finally get some older projects posted here! Thanks for stopping by everyone! I hope you are having a great week!<br />

<br />
This is another quilt that I shared in the early days of my blog. It is made with Meadowsweet 2 fabric by Sandi Henderson. I fell in love with the strawberry print in this collection, and I knew that I needed to do something with this wonderful fabric.<br />

The pattern for this book is in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Living-Large-2-Heather-Peterson/dp/B00527DLHU" target="_blank">"Living Large 2"</a> by Anka's Treasures (Heather Mulder Peterson). It was a great pattern for showing off the large scale prints, while also having some interest in the piecing. <br />

I used a solid red for the setting stones and the inner border. With so many large scale prints, this was a great way to give a place for your eye to rest, while tying all of the colors together. <br />
<br />
I photographed this quilt at the Historic Barns Park and botanical gardens in Traverse City, MI. I love these beautiful brick barns, and they recently updated the interior to be used for events. I thought the beautiful garden was a great backdrop for this quilt given the prints in this fabric collection.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizoXmi4ygkeQDAn3nWUty3WxGfKXHZCpeBxmCrFhxt4aijBw6sd1FZtICSvEj2TUDaw-6rirQU95NyQXHWDrEuHql949L0zsXLJaHZMMsusDMWdhZ1YQ8srSKlYKskysAoQ9qn_X9y5hQ/s1600/Strawberry+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizoXmi4ygkeQDAn3nWUty3WxGfKXHZCpeBxmCrFhxt4aijBw6sd1FZtICSvEj2TUDaw-6rirQU95NyQXHWDrEuHql949L0zsXLJaHZMMsusDMWdhZ1YQ8srSKlYKskysAoQ9qn_X9y5hQ/s640/Strawberry+3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I had this quilted by "Mason Creek Quilting" before I bought my longarm machine. She had a great strawberry quilting design that was perfect for this quilt. Above is picture of my favorite block (the strawberries are so cute!). If you look closely at the quilting in the inner border you can see one of the strawberries. :)<br />
<br />
The binding and the white background are both from "Bliss" by Bonnie and Camille (I told you this was an old UFO!). I love the little bit of whimsy that these prints add to this quilt.<br />
<br />
It feels great to have another finish under my belt. I definitely don't need another quilt, but I just can't bring myself to get rid of this one. I've had too many years to bond with the project, haha. In the end, I finished 13 quilts in 2015! I have set my 2016 goal at 12 quilts, but I definitely feel like I can finish even more now that I can quilt the large ones myself. <br />

I took some time off from the blog to spend with friends and family, and get some much needed relaxation. Even though it is a snowy winter wonderland outside, I still have quilts finished this fall to share. <br />
<br />
This quilt has been waiting a long time to be finished. So long in fact, that since this top was pieced, I have moved 4 times, graduated from college, and worked at 3 different jobs. I finished this top around 6 years ago!!! In fact this was one of the first quilts I shared here on my blog. One of the photos in my blog header features this quilt top shortly after I pieced it.<br />

I absolutely love this quilt. These were leftover strips of older Amy Butler Prints, and so it ended up being a "free quilt", made entirely from leftovers. The pattern is "picnic quilt" found on the Moda Bake Shop. <br />

This past October (I know I'm slow on my posts), I took it to a local lake to take some photos. The colors had finally turned, and it was really starting to feel like fall. It's crazy to think that now we are sitting under 10"+ of snow!<br />

I'm not sure its that easy to see in the photo, but I quilted this with a swirl/flower design. It almost looks like a paisley, and I really like how the quilting complements the prints in this quilt. This was one of the first I quilted on my new longarm, and it was really fun to try something different. <br />
<br />
This quilt is a good lap size, and is perfect for the back of the couch. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this one yet, but I just love it!<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by everyone!!! Have a great week!<br />

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving holiday. We had a great time with my family. It was a weekend full of food, laughter, and good shopping!<br />
<br />
Today I have a quilt to share with you that has been a long time in the making. I originally pieced this quilt as a display for Kean's Store Company in Mason MI. It was a fun way to use a mix of floral prints, and play with fabric placement. The stars in the sashing are all from the same Lecien collection, which helped tie everything together. I loved the way the stars and the different sashing fabrics radiated out from the center. It gives this quilt a very vintage, "shabby chic" feel.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Now that I have my new long-arm machine, it was finally time to see this beauty finished. I did a free motion design that looks like roses with leaves. I love the way the quilting still allows this quilt to have a soft drape.<br />

So here's the best part: This quilt is for sale! You read that right! I'm actually letting one of my quilts out of my sight. ....<span style="color: #cc0000;">UPDATE, THIS QUILT HAS BEEN SOLD. THANKS EVERYONE!!!</span><br />
<br />
Why you ask? Simply put, I have run out of room for quilts. One day I dream of having a huge mansion full of quilt cabinets, chests, and beds. For now, I have to settle for a tiny 2 bed apartment. This quilt is made with the highest quality quilt shop material. Also the label can be customized (with a small message) if you are interested in giving this as a gift (even if its a gift for yourself).<br />

This quilt was R's Christmas gift LAST YEAR. I know....shameful. <br />

R had gotten me a quilt book called <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Transparency-Quilts-Projects-Selection-FunQuilts/dp/1607053543" target="_blank">"Transparency Quilts"</a> the previous Christmas, and I always thought one of those quilts would make a good gift for Russ. The quilts in that book are modern and not particularly feminine, which can be hard to find when looking for a gift for a man.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

R loves the outdoors, and camo print, so I wanted to make him a quilt that felt like the woods. I used a mixture of green and dark brown, so that it would feel outdoorsy (is that a word?). I love the way the colors play together to look like woven tartan. Transparency Quilts does a great job of guiding you through process of choosing colors for these quilts.<br />
<br />
I also had the long arm quilter do an all-over oak leaf pattern with acorns. I really felt like that is what sets it off and gives it a natural feel.<br />
<br />
R is so sweet. He sleeps with this quilt every night, and I love that he loves it so much. He wanted a big quilt that he could wrap up in completely, and this quilt fits the bill. It is a VERY large queen, and could probably work alright on a king sized bed too.<br />

<br />To photograph the quilt, I took it out to the Historic Barns Park in Traverse City. These barns were originally used to house the livestock that fed the local mental hospital. Recently the barns and gardens have been restored, and they are now open for events. They are absolutely huge and beautiful.<br />
<br />
It feels great to give a quilt to someone that truly appreciates it. <br />
<br />
Well, its time to bake cookies! Thanksgiving is only a few days away! Have a good one everybody!<br />

Do you work in an office space? I do. I work in a sea of cubicles with no windows. Very Boring...<br>
<br>
Anyway, I decided my cubicle needed some color, and happy color at that. I had some pretty scraps left over from my Star Blossoms quilt, and so I improvised something simple to brighten up my workspace. <br />
Another post in less than a week! Who can believe it?<br />
<br />
I told you I have been quilting up a storm, and I meant it.<br />
<br />
Today I'd like to share with you some kids quilts I made this past spring to celebrate a new baby born to one of my best, lifelong friends.<br />
<br />
My dear friend A and I have been friends since middle school. We knew each other when we were awkward, and immature, and dumb, and we still want to be friends with one another. Some of the highlights of my journey towards adulthood feature her, and the ridiculous things we did together. <br />
As an only child, she and one other friend of ours have been like family.<br />
<br />
A told me earlier this year that she was having a baby due in August. As she is the closest thing I have to a sister, I jumped on the opportunity to make a baby quilt for her new little one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtlQTgR3VUZ6tU9oDsD1uhTa2QZhPUrHn4k6n3Ogp53QTTtzugZIqEj3wNprhXDDo5yZT0Ito0bdZG9nZLJb_MtZ6o1Sc-aBah6wQyX6ZM51sGmV7VkbWdTq1LNIfcTFry7alE5K74B1g/s1600/IMG_20151028_074740.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtlQTgR3VUZ6tU9oDsD1uhTa2QZhPUrHn4k6n3Ogp53QTTtzugZIqEj3wNprhXDDo5yZT0Ito0bdZG9nZLJb_MtZ6o1Sc-aBah6wQyX6ZM51sGmV7VkbWdTq1LNIfcTFry7alE5K74B1g/s640/IMG_20151028_074740.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
This quilt was named "Welcome to The World!", as it is made from the Scrappy Trips Around the World pattern by Bonnie Hunter (<a href="http://www.quiltville.com/">www.quiltville.com</a>). It is a free pattern, and there was a scrappy trip along a few years ago that made this pattern very popular. I wish I had been able to capture the adorable quilting on this one. A friend of mine quilted it with butterflies and flowers all over.<br />
<br />
A also has a son. He is an adorable, sweet, fun kid and it always bothered me that I wasn't able to make him a quilt when he was born. I didn't think it was fair to make his new baby sister a quilt before making him one. His entire family are die hard Michigan State Spartan fans, so I knew I needed to make something green and white. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP-kF_yOZtqGgSGjy1Te-JADVaDpm6VGWIBL-ELjo8WiW3r8pQelLg0-ld-zKwZEej1HTLbHsvRZRaGTEi1u8vYO6czGoWFeS2I3TWA9nfpROZKvbjldeZxoUcILHYrszaNDgH6duU1gw/s1600/IMG_20151028_074822.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP-kF_yOZtqGgSGjy1Te-JADVaDpm6VGWIBL-ELjo8WiW3r8pQelLg0-ld-zKwZEej1HTLbHsvRZRaGTEi1u8vYO6czGoWFeS2I3TWA9nfpROZKvbjldeZxoUcILHYrszaNDgH6duU1gw/s640/IMG_20151028_074822.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This quilt is named "Go Green!" in honor of the Spartans. This is also a free pattern from Bonnie Hunter called "Scrappy Mountain Majesties" (Quiltville.com). This was a fun, quick pattern, and it was a great use of scraps. All of the green fabrics in this quilt were weird sized hunks left over from other projects (with a few fat quarters mixed in). <br />
<br />
I knew that giving a young rambunctious boy a quilt with so much white could be a bad decision. Later on, A sent me this picture, and I knew that it didn't matter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This one was quilted with all over loops and it turned out really cute. I love that he loves his quilt so much.<br />
<br />
A has since had a beautiful baby girl. I'm so glad that even though I wasn't there to welcome her, the quilt was.<br />
<br />
<br />
Until next week! <br />

Did you miss me?! I've missed all of you.<br />
<br />
I am currently writing this post at the library because my computer is still broken. I have been quilting SO MUCH, and I haven't been able to show you! It stinks!<br />
<br />
I finally got some much needed pictures taken, and then I remembered that I still had photos from this spring that I never was able to share. As I look out the window I see beautiful orange and yellow trees, yet these photos were taken in MAY (disgraceful), when the cherry blossoms were out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6nhRmIK35SI8VH1Bb7uoR1OLNq8lHJIuTn1wgSGPX_u9DQXiJO7oBUfq5InggNbzzxwFqOalWPWD3hXIfdpGsGg7eIjY4ru_IvIkQaGDwhlr2U8jK-gCAPwMjJ-Vc-esmMZIVdLLBwEM/s1600/10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6nhRmIK35SI8VH1Bb7uoR1OLNq8lHJIuTn1wgSGPX_u9DQXiJO7oBUfq5InggNbzzxwFqOalWPWD3hXIfdpGsGg7eIjY4ru_IvIkQaGDwhlr2U8jK-gCAPwMjJ-Vc-esmMZIVdLLBwEM/s640/10.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPLrBzS-tq_nuCIg1fIz6Cs0lCTBgqNotpjvnVGFIVRokyFFCjLrYEZrZD4zoViIv3XE9olAa_i96IzY7x2hyHMZvFLP3Hz-JbxEFJXJ3ajp_3yOliOpi0Tjhw2FsFTKUfeZHLLDuQtck/s1600/11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPLrBzS-tq_nuCIg1fIz6Cs0lCTBgqNotpjvnVGFIVRokyFFCjLrYEZrZD4zoViIv3XE9olAa_i96IzY7x2hyHMZvFLP3Hz-JbxEFJXJ3ajp_3yOliOpi0Tjhw2FsFTKUfeZHLLDuQtck/s640/11.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I finished another top made from my pattern <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/130055784/instant-download-quilt-pattern-pdf-when?ref=shop_home_active_4" target="_blank">"When In Rome"</a>. I had been staring at the fabric collection "April Showers" from Bonnie and Camille for months, when I finally broke down and bought the last I could find. I was curious how this quilt would turn out with a smaller scale print in the center/borders, and I am really pleased with how it turned out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWPHPJbbacyp0PDTKgyGGbJtTuHNPM1n_1oNE0aq6tOtrLqvnU66_gYUj7tnTjOXq85OhEBVVsrph7dazc0nFs09e_BYLEcJwtaZsreIGxME5Cf2nktmYzMmHmXY45i1T71gAKpxoBB7k/s1600/12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWPHPJbbacyp0PDTKgyGGbJtTuHNPM1n_1oNE0aq6tOtrLqvnU66_gYUj7tnTjOXq85OhEBVVsrph7dazc0nFs09e_BYLEcJwtaZsreIGxME5Cf2nktmYzMmHmXY45i1T71gAKpxoBB7k/s640/12.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
My friend and I took a drive on Old Mission Peninsula this past May to take a gander at the beautiful cherry orchards. I truly believe that this is one of the most gorgeous places on the planet, and I always feel so blessed to be able to visit with just a short drive.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I can't wait to get this one quilted, and get it on my bed! (one other fun secret is that I bought a longarm machine!!! Yay!!!....More on that later) For now, I will just leave you with photos of these beautiful trees. <br />

I have another finish to share! You may remember this quilt when I finished the top over a year ago. Near Christmas, I finally was able to get it to the quilter for finishing, and then shortly after we moved, I finally got the binding on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjclqnge0PGxACmCg7YiAhhyphenhyphenzjayqLD24npyTuvgBLH59AvgIxzPIW-FcBwvL3dWDntKJEN4xaBt300o00m7l6jxPsBWnBRs0Ec4nxrLAXu0kXACCkq3lZihNAtTzUxVDe8HZ0k3zxbvNQ/s1600/Bowties+in+the+Fall+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjclqnge0PGxACmCg7YiAhhyphenhyphenzjayqLD24npyTuvgBLH59AvgIxzPIW-FcBwvL3dWDntKJEN4xaBt300o00m7l6jxPsBWnBRs0Ec4nxrLAXu0kXACCkq3lZihNAtTzUxVDe8HZ0k3zxbvNQ/s640/Bowties+in+the+Fall+1.jpg" width="486" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is another one of those quilts that is "free". Everything came from my stash to make it. The pattern was very simple and quick to piece which was a great way to achieve instant gratification. The blocks are just oversized bow tie blocks.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi76OY8Xb9DCS2nVtF-BTwpk_UN_Jbo8r4Taw1gM-vTcPHHkAIIYJbyb1ysT-3Eq7TwIhG20sWaMibNLV3t059dL32Ig8uNnglA6Qolqg6yvK20PoVyqAyxMx1X2HToiiyxCMVzM6tJid4/s1600/Bowties+in+the+Fall+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="338" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi76OY8Xb9DCS2nVtF-BTwpk_UN_Jbo8r4Taw1gM-vTcPHHkAIIYJbyb1ysT-3Eq7TwIhG20sWaMibNLV3t059dL32Ig8uNnglA6Qolqg6yvK20PoVyqAyxMx1X2HToiiyxCMVzM6tJid4/s640/Bowties+in+the+Fall+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finally got some photos about a month ago, when the weather finally started to warm up, but unfortunately the colors didn't come out quite right. The colors in the photo below are the closest to the actual quilt. The grass was still brown when these photos were taken, but now we have beautiful green grass and trees as summer approaches.</div>

I loved the quilting that was done on this one. I wanted this to be an "autumn" inspired quilt, so I had it quilted with red oak leaves and acorns in an orange thread. I really think it turned out great! </div>

Thanks for letting me share this quilt with you! I have been sewing like crazy, and have much more to share in the weeks to come. Happy June everyone!!!</div>

Can you believe it?!<br />
<br />
I am super lucky to be able to work-for-the-fun-of-it at a local quilt shop, in addition to my regular day job. Recently I got to make a display quilt for the shop, in one of my favorite new lines of fabric, "Paradiso" by Kate Spain.<br />
<br />
The pattern I used is "Star Blossoms" by Cotton Way, which is a layer cake friendly pattern.<br />
<br />

This pattern doesn't leave a ton of room to make cutting mistakes, however it does leave you a few extra layer cake squares to make a substitution if you need to. I really loved making this quilt, because it was such a pleasant challenge. I am a chronic "easy quilts" type of girl, because I believe in the beauty of simplicity, and I love the gratification of finishing something. This was a great exercise in patience in persistence, which is something that I can always use.<br />

This quilt took long enough that I was able to watch the entire "Harry Potter" movie series while piecing. I sewed on my last border half an hour prior to the Death of Voldemort (if you aren't a HP fan, sorry for the spoiler).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAka512Scgtae45NC3J3JI9yV_06IpWXxSb0hEtXlOpKFGeEegjwdMIFGlmLmH0ZwjBn4BLudj-P2m2qv83TizHMZKb2vr2d7vhiaIzE7iJCJ7Y9rRax5dEukpHTSKGY4Z4q-XvtiUs-o/s1600/Star+Blossoms+1e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAka512Scgtae45NC3J3JI9yV_06IpWXxSb0hEtXlOpKFGeEegjwdMIFGlmLmH0ZwjBn4BLudj-P2m2qv83TizHMZKb2vr2d7vhiaIzE7iJCJ7Y9rRax5dEukpHTSKGY4Z4q-XvtiUs-o/s640/Star+Blossoms+1e.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I loved this quilt as I was piecing it, but I really had the "AHA" moment when I put the borders on. I think it is because this fabric line has so many beautiful colors in it, and the border print tied all of them together. I'm in love.<br />
<br />
I finished this quilt at the store after finishing my shift Saturday. Before I left it there to be hung in the store, I decided to grab a few quick shots on my phone so that I could share it with you.<br />
<br />
I hope you all find yourselves well, and that all your quilting adventures bring you joy!!!! We are so lucky to be able to create, and sew for the love of it. Thanks for letting me share my quilting adventures with you!!!<br />

Happy Tuesday Everyone!<br />

Here is the annotated version:<br />
1. R and I unexpectedly found ourselves being kicked out of our condo by April 2015 (this month), because someone wealthier than we are offered to pay a lot more for our space.<br />
2. Due to our pending homelessness, we tried to buy a house. The house we tried to buy failed inspection, and everything else in our price range was either too small, or in need of a lot of work.<br />
3. Following the complete failure of our home buying attempt, I started looking for a new job.<br />
4. I got an interview right away at the one company I had hoped to get a job with for some time.<br />
5. I got hired, with a 30% raise from my old position.<br />
6. We moved to Traverse City in February.<br />
<br />
So...naturally...I haven't had time to sew or blog. We have finally gotten settled into our new place, and I have been sewing up a storm ever since. It is so nice to have space to move around again, and I have my own sewing space in our new place. We are both really enjoying Traverse City so far, and it has been refreshing to be around happy, polite and kind people again. <br />
<br />
The first thing I wanted to do when we moved was to get some old projects finished. I still have A LOT to go, but I was able to get a few quilted right away.<br />
<br />
The first one I want to show you is called "Aztek Fire". This pattern was found in "More Nickel Quilts" by Pat Speth. It is using 5" scrap squares of batik fabric. These particular fabrics were scraps left from other projects, and was a "free quilt" (at least that's what I like to call it when you don't have to buy anything to make a quilt).<br />

<br />Yesterday was really the first sunny day over 50 degrees, so I took the opportunity to get some photos taken. There was very little wind, so it was a great time to get some photos of the quilt laying down.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The blocks are a split nine patch, which gives a really fun effect, when you pair them together into pyramids. I was lucky that most of the blocks had another block similar in color to be paired with. Most of the stray weird colors got put to the outside of the row.</div>

I love all of my quilts, but this is definitely one that I am more proud of. It is more intricate than a lot of the quilts I do, and it was a good exercise in patience and precision. Plus it always feels good to use up tiny bits of fabric. The scrappiness of the whole thing makes the quilt even more interesting.</div>

Can you believe it!?<br />
<br />
In my defense, the long arm quilter had this quilt for 3 months. I'm really not completely lazy, haha!<br />
<br />
Anyway, I have titled this quilt "A Bit of Light Reading from 1974" because I think the blocks look like stacks of books, and the fabric is 1974 by Urban Chiks. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil065xGoVaR0DpADNz_Mf_AKZDxkeF70zTCBFVptNFDsjCWUjuMU3k7MCFB-FmEnY0fPdBJFQD-N9OzpFJecdngUR5YNhxtp71cAjes2e4hIQCzVO2Wr7G1MmiGOvP454Up35eKgqYjvo/s1600/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil065xGoVaR0DpADNz_Mf_AKZDxkeF70zTCBFVptNFDsjCWUjuMU3k7MCFB-FmEnY0fPdBJFQD-N9OzpFJecdngUR5YNhxtp71cAjes2e4hIQCzVO2Wr7G1MmiGOvP454Up35eKgqYjvo/s1600/5.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You might remember this top from a few years ago while I was still living in Kalamazoo. I pieced these blocks improv because I couldn't figure out what else I'd like to do with such fun modern fabric. I ended up wasting quite a lot of the background fabric, but I think the effect was worth it in the end. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9GzIFubXZDulQRiakAGab0YB2zlaSbdLz4gnKwYaPM-NXi8HgEdB12Fj9pmeOTTDSCxRn_-ZOPnGFDqAo8R0OEUv_WyzApZAoDMdDbpKQspmGjnzg5Bv-rLj9MLRweB40X-SCBI1jREE/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9GzIFubXZDulQRiakAGab0YB2zlaSbdLz4gnKwYaPM-NXi8HgEdB12Fj9pmeOTTDSCxRn_-ZOPnGFDqAo8R0OEUv_WyzApZAoDMdDbpKQspmGjnzg5Bv-rLj9MLRweB40X-SCBI1jREE/s1600/2.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
I love the quilting pattern that my quilter used, but I was a little disappointed that she didn't "seat" the pantograph so that the quilting passes weren't noticeable. This pattern should have fit together like a puzzle to look like one all over pattern, and she decided to quilt it in rows instead. I have another quilt with her right now, so I'm hoping we don't have the same problem (eek!). Either way, I am pleased overall with how it turned out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBWdv_7PjbI7HTFVp4WqeGEqJgBtZqhybz5Cmg4LQbexPqyG4JRB_aMetx4NrVSFP97HDnaLq-tSzfh6GSvcSoUUNbwEdJ_c-aZDjhQsgDJuuhgy6kwQAE9B1yHq52txGIDCOCRALuJpM/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBWdv_7PjbI7HTFVp4WqeGEqJgBtZqhybz5Cmg4LQbexPqyG4JRB_aMetx4NrVSFP97HDnaLq-tSzfh6GSvcSoUUNbwEdJ_c-aZDjhQsgDJuuhgy6kwQAE9B1yHq52txGIDCOCRALuJpM/s1600/3.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I have been thinking about turning this quilt design into a pattern, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it without wasting so much background fabric. Plus, I've seen other similar quilts. What do you guys think? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It has been a beautiful autumn here in Northern Michigan. This is by far one of the best color years we've had in a decade. With the color, we have experienced awesome apple harvests, crisp breezes, and cider with doughnuts. I have been excited for a good stretch of sweater weather as well. There has been some grumbling about snow falling this weekend, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will hold of for just a while longer.<br />
<br />

I am hoping to have another quilt back from the quilter soon, and another quilt to show and share!<br />

I hope everyone is having a great fall, and I hope you are all working on something fun and quilty!!!<br />

This really is a quick and easy pattern for a baby quilt, but it is also large enough that it could be used as a lap quilt. this pattern lends itself well to larger prints that you hate to cut into small pieces, and it would look great in almost any fabric line.<br />

<br />
Recently it seems like half the people I know are having a baby, so I thought I'd better start working on some baby quilts to keep as emergency gifts.<br />
<br />
This one does have an intended recipient due to be born soon, but for the sake of the suprise I'm not telling who. :)<br />

I had some adorable animal fabric laying around, and I just KNEW it would be perfect for a baby quilt. Problem was, I didn't have any patterns on hand, and I had limited yardage. So, to solve both problems, I made my own design!!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />This quilt was a ton of fun to make, and it was my first attempt at free motion quilting on my home machine. The quilting isn't perfect (I did manage one long pucker on the back, but its not very noticeable after washing), but I did a better job than I thought I would on the first try. I was really impressed with the way my Husqvarna handled it, and the tension was great. Now I just need to work on consistent stitch length, and smooth movements.<br />

I really loved the way it turned out, and I can see myself re-using this design in the future. It really lends itself well to focus fabrics, and there are so many cute kid prints out right now.<br />

I am thinking about writing up a pattern for this. What do you guys think? Should I? I'm thinking the photo below would make a good cover shot. :)<br />

EXCELLENT NEWS EVERYONE!!! I am NOT dead. Neither have I given up on this blog. In fact I have some exciting things to share with you in the near future. The last few months have been a crazy whirlwind of change, and planning, and daydreams. All of that coupled with a broken computer (now fixed) has put a damper on my blogging ability. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Still, here I am, and I've been creating beautiful things; things that have yet to be noticed (see quote above). I am starting to meet some of my resolutions, and also acheiving goals I didn't even realize I had. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I free-motion-quilted my first quilt! AND my quilting doesn't suck (it's not perfect, but it doesn't suck)! I'll count that as one victory. Finishing the quilt has only further fueled my fire for this previously untouched aspect of my craft, and I am SO EXCITED! I have started to plan the quilting futures for quilt tops that have sat untouched for far too long. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
Secondly, R. and I joined a gym and February, and we are working it out! It feels so good to get healthy together, and to feel like you are not alone on the journey. We are hoping to get stronger, so that we can start backpacking together. Our hope is that we can backpack on Isle Royale in the next year or so, and we really want to be ready for the challenge. <br />
<br />
I am considering incorporating more of my life into this blog including my quilting pursuits. I have a degree in fashion, and I would love to incorporate personal style, and lifestyle insights. I would love input from my readers in regards to this. Would you like a mix of topics, or do you prefer mostly quilt discussion?<br />
<br />
Look for some quilty updates soon! The sun has been shining here this week, and it's primo time to get some pictures taken!<br />
<br />
In the mean time, I wanted to share my favorite fabric line that is out right now. I'm sure you all know that I love Denyse Schmidt, and this line is no different. Ansonia in the blue/green colorway is my favorite!<br />
